Blurred lines and soft geometrics emulate a simple, elegant Island vibe

This month, Country Homes and Interiors magazine picked up on a little piece of Mallorcan Barr Design chic. Seeking out bathrooms with a difference, journalist Linda Clayton picked up on the blurred lines and soft geometrics of Huguet’s tiles and asked us if she could feature them in her article on sanctuary washrooms. Quoted in the article, Rachele Bowley, lead designer at Barr Design, elaborates…

Bathrooms have increasingly become a pivotal part of the interior design scheme, a space with which to make a statement. Although the brief very much depends on the client we do often find ourselves designing for like-minded individuals. Those who share our penchant for paired back simplicity and our passion for clean lines, combined with simple statement pieces.

These handmade geometric tiles, by Huguet Mallorca, will resonate way beyond the current trend for all things angular. Their soft matt finish and the subtle colours provide the perfect contrast to their varied geometric forms. The exciting thing was that the pattern combinations were endless. Each bathroom was designed with its own unique tile configuration and muted colour scheme. Of course, a monochrome bathroom also featured (this was a Barr design after all!).

At Barr Design we love to mix the rough with the smooth, letting minimal lines contrast against rustic form. Mixes and contrasts in materials, such as the sharp black lines of the villa’s bathrooms against an exposed natural rock built into the shower or the starkness of the black frames against the wonderfully irregular dry-stone walls.

The brief for the project was ‘understated lux’ very much in line with the trademark Barr Design style. The simple forms of the matt black fixings contrast elegantly with the statement handmade rustic tiles at the villa. The smooth matt black gives depth and creates impact, setting off the simple hot & cold lettering.

The inspiration, which came from local materials and traditional manufacturing, provided a visual thread which would tie together the whole villa. Setting rattan and stone against a simple backdrop of matt black fixtures and fittings and a neutral colour pallete, emulates the simple elegant island vibe.
