When our clients relocated to Mallorca, they purchased a traditional finca. The classic Mallorcan stone house was surrounded by orange and lemon groves and was in every way the idyllic mountain hideaway. However, the 1970’s terrace and pool detracted from the property’s charm and was in desperate need of an aesthetic and functional overhaul.
Judith and David were put in touch with the Barr Baleares team through a friend who had had works carried out by the Barr Group in the UK. The project scope was to extend and raise the entire terrace, in line with the rest of the property, improving the flow and giving a simple streamlined visual. The pool itself required reshaping for symmetry and greater depth, relining and a complete technical system replacement.
For the pool infrastructure our clients opted for a salt water chlorination, often the system of choice for new or renovated swimming pools - easier to maintain, less expensive in the longer term and more environmentally friendly. Of course, along with this goes considerations of materials choices – salt water will corrode natural stone and standard grouting systems. As a result, porcelain tiles, designed to look like natural stone and with a non-slip texture were used for this project. A specialist resin-based epoxy grout was used, essential to ensure the salt water pool’s longevity.
We asked James Armstrong, Barr Baleares co-director and site manager for this project - what were the biggest challenge of the works? He responded, “As always, working on the island in the summer months, the main challenge is the hot sun and its impact on materials, however most importantly, it is perfect for the end-users!
The finished space, with gardens lit to highlight planting and natural stone blanketing the newly raised terrace, is perfectly in keeping with the finca. Our clients are delighted with their stunning new pool and terrace.” says James “Well done to the BB team who embraced the project with great enthusiasm and brought it in to budget!”
If your pool and terrace need a revamp (or reshape!) for 2019 summer get in touch with James or Pedro, who can arrange an initial site meeting. From there the team will put together a build design and quotation. f you are starting from scratch, without any plans, then fear not...our Barr Baleares team can work up a visual scheme and structural specification or recommend specialist experts where required.
