London Design Festival last month celebrated products and skills from the UK design world and across the globe. Exhibiting at the East End’s trendy Old Truman Brewery was a new and exciting collaboration “Made in Mallorca”.
Eleven Mallorcan artisan entrepreneurs/design-led organisations (with the support of the Balearic Government’s Ministry for Work, Trade and Industry and in collaboration with the Majorca Chamber of Commerce), came together under the banner “Made in Mallorca’ to show the international design world what the island has to offer. The carefully curated set showcased a fabulously eclectic combination of artisan pieces, chosen from the portfolios of each participant.
Made in Mallorca brings together stories of passion from the islands design-led producers. Each one with its own handmade specialty, the collaboration produced an exhibition set encapsulating a quintessentially Mallorcan design spirit. Exhibits included tiles, textiles, ceramics, glass, lighting and furniture.
Amongst our favourites were La Percera, who exhibited with their Robusta chair and Saturn stool with rattan, leather and palm upholstery, designed by founder Marlene Albaladejo. LPM design contemporary pieces, inspired by traditional objects of daily use, and produces them in a way that is 100% handcrafted, artisan, local and sustainable.
Another big hit with the Barr Design team were “Contain Mallorca”, a lighting and furniture design studio, specialising in management, manufacture, branding and lighting consultation. Contain Mallorca work in collaboration with architects, designers and professionals to creating unique pieces and projects. Supporting local manufacturers and working together with people who perform their jobs with passion, Contain Mallorca very much reflect the Barr Baleares value set.
Huguet Mallorca, long time hot favourite of the Barr Design team, renewed the interest of the London design world with their fabulous hand-made ceramics. Both ‘of the moment’ and timeless, Huguet continue to offer endless design possibilities.
Likewise, 2monos, Mallorcan based self-production studio, offer something a little bit different. With an original, personalised and high-quality design and manufacture service, the studio is able to fulfil requirements on a single piece or large-scale production basis. Projects range from retail concept, to furniture and lighting design, for commercial spaces, private homes and exhibitions alike – it seems like there is nothing 2monos cannot do!
Other fabulous contributing exhibitors include 8ulls, Catala Roig Ceramic, Paparkone, Teixits Riera, Tonia Fuster, Mirenchu. For further details check out the Made in Mallorca London Design Fair listing at https://www.londondesignfair.co.uk/galleries/balearic-islands.
